Aquarium plant clip

I needed something to attach larger plants to my aquarium and I couldn't find anything, so I made my own.

This model is designed specifically for your larger plants like monstera. I tried many different ways to do this, but this is the only thing that has worked reliably for me. I printed 2 of these and they have been going strong for over a year.

You will need some wire to attach the plants. I use some anodized aluminum bonsai wire that I already had. It's strong wire and much more malleable than normal wire. You thread the wire through and bend the corners down into the grove on the inner portion of the clip. There are multiple holes and I use two loops of wire per clip. The glass of the aquarium will keep the wire in position. Also, the aluminum bonsai wire is softer so it won't scratch the glass.

This model is for aquariums with 8mm glass on rimless tanks. You can go in TinkerCad and make one to fit your tank. It’s a pretty simple model. If your aquarium is heated then you will need to use PETG bc PLA tends to warp and fall apart.

Just as a note, I did actually reverse the clip on my aquarium bc my monstera didn’t like its trunk being in water all the time. So, now the trunk is outside the aquarium and I put the air roots inside the aquarium. The monstera are much happier now.

Update 02/07/2025: The clip finally broke. The monstera got so big that it snapped one of the supports so the clip can only take so much. The plant was just leaning over but it didn‘t fall off the tank. I just need to make a few to keep on hand for when it fails.
