Anyone who owns a cat knows they are harder to capture than a dog. A tabby is not just stripes, it is the particular M on the forehead, the rings on the tail and the way the banding fades down the legs. No two tortoiseshells are alike. A cat figurine stands or falls on the coat and the eyes, so that is where the work goes.

Getting a cat right

Most of a cat's likeness is in the head: the width of the face, the set of the ears, the length of the nose and the size of the eyes. We build those from your photos rather than from a breed shape, so a round faced moggy stays round and a fine boned Siamese stays fine.

The coat is painted by hand to your photos, with the stripes, patches and white where they actually are on your cat. The eyes get the most care of all, because a figure with the wrong shade of green looks like somebody else's cat.

You see renders of the sculpt before anything is printed and can ask for changes. It is then printed in resin, which keeps fine fur texture at 15cm, painted, and fixed to its base.

How long it takes

The quote comes back with a lead time before you commit to anything. Sculpting and hand painting are what take the time, so if it is a gift, put the date in the form and we will tell you honestly whether it can be met. The finished figure is posted tracked anywhere in New Zealand.

Questions

My cat hates the camera. What photos work?

Lots of quick ones taken while they are relaxed, rather than one posed shot. A cat asleep in the sun is easy to photograph from every side. Get down to their level for the face, and take one from above while they are lying flat.

Can you make a figurine of a cat that has passed away?

Yes. Send every photo you have, older ones included, and tell us how you want to remember them. Our pet memorial page explains how we work from the photos you have.

Can you do two cats together?

Yes, on one base or as two figures. Send photos of each, and one of them together if you have it, so their sizes come out right against each other.
