IKEA Vidja Lamp Clip Replacement

The Problem

The IKEA Vidja lamp is an modern but affordable lamp. Unfortunately it has a crucial design flaw (some might say it is intended): The stability of the whole lamp depends on a little and easy to break plastic clip.

The IKEA Vidja has a pole inside that connects to the top of the lamp using that cheap clip. The whole system is under tension to keep the lamp stable and straight and prevent it from collapsing. However, this also increases the stress on the plastic clip, eventually increasing the risk of breaking it.

The Failure

After our dog accidentally ran into the lamp it eventually tipped over. Of course that plastic clip had to break. The lamp therefore became pretty wobbly so that even looking at it might make it collapse. IKEA is known to provide spare parts, but unfortunately they think it is not worth it for a 30€ lamp (well, 70$ in the US). This model is meant to replace that part.

The Design

There are two versions:

• Pretty much a copy of the original. Unfortunately it needs to be printed standing on the base requiring supports and making it easy to break due to the layer line direction. • A flat version which is meant to be printed laying on the side (it's just the other version with a trimmed base plate). It requires no supports, prints super fast and is extra stiff due the layer line direction. Unfortunately it doesn't look as good, but honestly - who cares how your lamp looks like from the top?
