My kitchen trash can has a hold open feature in case I want to enjoy the smells of last nights lasagna today. I have never used this feature intentionally, This plug inserts from the same side as the steel bar that holds up the lid. Press firmly to move the bar aside when installing and then the bar holds the part from falling out, the flange on the part keeps it from going out the other way.
Edit, v3 added with longer body and locking feature after my v1 decided to throw itself away. We all experience design failure, but I'm probably the only one here who designs parts that throw themselves away when they fail.
