Introduction

Some time ago I decided to finally organize my electronic components and I needed a place to store them. There are endless designs for 3D-printed boxes online in all shapes and sizes: large, small, stackable, modular, with or without lids and many, many others. Naturally, I started by looking online for the models I could use. However, no matter how long I searched, I couldn't find what I needed so I eventually decided to design my own.

The available models didn't work for me since I needed something that could store all kinds of electronic components from breakout boards to tiny SMD components. This meant tight tolerances since sorting them by hand would be a nightmare if they ended up in a wrong place. I also couldn't allow the drawers to slide out and scatter the components all over the floor for the same reason.

Features

• Available in different sizes and number of containers • Includes parametric models for full flexibility • Stackable • Tight tolerances for small components • Rails that prevent drawers from sliding out • Secure locking mechanism • Sturdy outer shell for rigidity

Extra hardware

• M3x6 bolts - 4x per shelf except the first • M3 nuts - 4x per shelf except the first • Spring up to 5mm in diameter - 1x per layer

You can still use the models without the extra hardware but you'll lose some features: fasteners are needed to secure the layers above the first while the spring is used in the locking mechanism.

Printing tips

• PLA recommended • Use brim if you have issues with warping - and yes, this applies even for PLA. Due to the tight tolerances even small amounts of warping can make the parts unusable. Make sure the brim is large enough to round the corners enough. Printing in an enclosure might help but I don't have one to try it out. • Be careful with input shaping. It might add unwanted artifacts that could prevent your parts from fitting together, especially the locking mechanism parts. • Enable ironing for the handles if you can't move them easily

Note: I had to re-model this project in FreeCAD for sharing as I originally designed it in a different CAD software. This was my first FreeCAD project so the way it' is designed might not be optimal.
