More information
Parametric desiccant tray designed to fit within the stiffening structures of the underside of the lids of these IRIS 74 Quart Plastic Storage Bins that I use as dryboxes.
Can either be friction fit within the stiffening supports, or mounted more directly using command strips or double-sided tape attached to the tabs on the side of the tray.
If the tabs are large, they will require support material in order to print well, I recommend printing with the vented surface on the printbed - it may be possible to print with the shallow depth axis on the bed to save on support material when the desired printed tabs are larger than 15mm or so.
Parameters available in the OpenSCAD project:
• Desiccant Tray Width (X), Length (Y), and Depth (Z) • Wall width • This is both the width of the walls of the tray, as well as the width of the channel cut for the stiffening structures. By default, this is 1.8mm to give a snug fit with the ~1.8-1.9mm width i measured in a few places on my own boxes. I'd suggest taking a pair of calipers to your containers before printing with the default here.
• Tab Width • Slot Length (this is measured center-to-center of the half circles at each end) • Slot Width (this is the diameter of the half-circles) • Given this, a slot width of 1mm and length of 7mm results in a total length of 8mm, edge-to-edge, as the radii of the half circles will be .5mm each, plus the 7mm center-to-center length)
• Number of slot columns (times the slot is tiled in the X dimension) • Number of slot rows (times the slot is tiled in the Y dimension)
Note on preview performance in OpenSCAD:
• If you have a default OpenSCAD configuration, you may see warnings in the console when trying to render the model preview, resulting in no model preview. My current understanding of this issue is that the high number of CSG elements due to the array of non-primitive slots causes the default limit of 100,000 elements to be exceeded. I've found that bumping this value to ~350,000 allows the model preview to render, although interacting with the preview model at this point is fairly unresponsive.
My suggestion is to perform a full render of the model (this takes ~40s on my MacBook Pro), allowing you to change the camera perspective as necessary to get a good perspective on the changes you're considering making, before returning to a preview render. OpenSCAD should (at least it does on my machine) preserve the camera angle and position on the model when switching from a full render to preview.
If anyone has any pointers on optimizing OpenSCAD projects for preview render times and avoiding the issues with the CSG Tree exceeding the default limit, please let me know, I'd be happy to learn some more about the tool. I'm still pretty novice with it!
