More information

This is a fully parametric rectangular tray designed in OpenSCAD, intended to print cleanly on FDM printers while maintaining a finished, “manufactured” feel.

The design focuses on:

• smooth exterior edges that won’t snag or feel sharp,

• a comfortable interior geometry with a concave floor-to-wall fillet,

• and sensible defaults that print well on typical consumer printers.

I’m sharing both pre-exported STL files and the OpenSCAD source, so you can either print immediately or customize it to your own dimensions and use case.

Key Features

• Chamfered outer edges (top & bottom) Helps with handling, reduces sharp corners, and improves durability.

• Chamfered inner rim Removes the sharp inside edge at the top of the tray.

• Smooth concave interior fillet Creates a continuous transition from floor to wall, making the tray easier to wipe clean and more pleasant to use.

• Parametric OpenSCAD design Easily adjust:

• length, width, and height

• wall and floor thickness

• corner radii

• chamfer sizes

• fillet radius and smoothness

• FDM-friendly geometry

• Prints flat on the bed

• No supports required

• No overhangs that cause trouble

• Designed around realistic wall and layer multiples

Included Files

• ✅ STL files (pre-exported):

• 10 × 7 × 1 (inches)

• 4 × 4 × 0.33 (inches)

• 3 × 3 × 0.25 (inches)

• ✅ OpenSCAD (.scad) source file

• Fully commented

• Guardrails (assert()) to prevent invalid geometry

• Easy to customize for other sizes or applications

Recommended Print Settings

These are what the model was designed and tested around:

• Nozzle: 0.4 mm

• Layer height: 0.2 mm

• (0.16 mm or 0.12 mm works great for higher surface quality)

• Perimeters: 4–5

• Bottom layers: 6 (≈ 1.2 mm)

• Infill: 0–15%

• You can safely use 0% infill; the model is mostly perimeters + floor

• Supports: None

• Orientation: Print flat on the bed

Note: OpenSCAD Preview (F5) may show blue striping artifacts due to OpenCSG. Render (F6) and exported STL files are clean.

Customization Notes (for OpenSCAD users)

All primary dimensions and features are parameter-driven at the top of the file:

• tray_len, tray_wid, tray_h – overall size

• wall, floor – structural thickness

• corner_r, inner_r – corner radii

• outer_ch_top, outer_ch_bottom – outer chamfers

• inner_ch_top – inner rim chamfer

• inner_fillet_r, inner_fillet_steps – interior fillet shape

The script includes safety checks to prevent accidentally generating invalid geometry when changing parameters.

Use Cases

This tray is intentionally generic and can be adapted for many uses, including:

• desk organizers

• parts trays

• workshop catch trays

• hobby or craft trays

• small tabletop organizers

• custom storage inserts

If you modify or remix it, I’d love to see what you make.
